I <3 movies, going to the movies or just relaxing watching a movie at home is one of my favorite things to do. But that kind of hobby can get expensive. When you’re in debt and looking to save money, then you tend to cut out unnecessary expenses first and movies often are considered an unnecessary expense. But what if you are spending money on things you truly enjoy, like movies? Here is how to save money on movies.

Can You Save Money On Movies?

Movies used to be a popular event. Many of us can recall going out on a Friday night with our friends to catch the latest flick. Now, movie tickets have gotten expensive, not to mention the fact that popcorn can cost you an arm and a leg. So how do you catch a movie you’ve been eyeing while also saving money?

Make It A Special Occasion

If you love going to the movies but can’t justify the high costs, try making it a special occasion! You can choose the movies as part of a birthday gift, a date night, or even a night out with friends. You will still be able to enjoy going. However, you’ll be able to save on movies as you only go out when you’re ready to celebrate and have a good time.

Love going to the movies a lot more than just on special occasions? You could always ask for gift cards or money for your birthday and holidays. That way, you can enjoy the movies without spending your own money.

Redbox

Redbox is a great option if you want to save on movies! Not only does it stock the most recent releases, but you can usually find older movies and classics as well. The great thing about Redbox is that you rent the movie for just $1-$2 a day. So, if you just so happen to love the new movie, you can watch it as many times as you want within your rental period.

Redbox also has a few different ways to save, including coupon codes and their mobile text club. You can typically get movies for cheap or even free. Allowing you to watch them in the comfort of your own home.

Skip Renting Online

I know it’s convenient to just rent on iTunes or Amazon. But for $5 you can usually buy the movie at Target or Walmart. While you have 30 days to watch the movie, once you start it you only have a day to watch it. Though it’s always worth it to check to see the movie of the week. Movie of the Weeks is usually just $0.99 for the 24-hour rental period.

I know it’s convenient, but it’s also overpriced. Save by hitting up Redbox on your way out of the grocery store or actually make use of Netflix for something other than binge watching a TV show. You can still enjoy the movie from the comfort of your home with a glass of wine and popcorn. You’ll be enjoying your movie in no time.

Streaming Services

If you are a hardcore movie buff, you can save some serious cash on movies by opting for a monthly service. Options like Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, HBO, and Showtime are great options for those that love to watch movies on more than just special occasions.

Which streaming service you choose will depend on what you are looking for movie wise, but you are bound to find something that fits your needs. You could always test out each service by signing up for their free trial. Just remember to cancel before it’s up! From there, it may make it easier to choose the service that best suits you.

Another great perk to streaming services is that they offer the option to watch shows as well! So while movies are fun and great to watch when you want to have a date night or unwind, you get the added benefit of replacing cable if you choose. For about $15 a month, streaming options can save you quite a bit of money in the long run, for the same cost of going to the movies just once.

Wrapping it Up with a Bow on Top

You don’t have to spend a lot of money to see a movie, and you may not even have to get dressed up to watch some of the latest movie releases. Even if you are looking to save money, you don’t have to give up the movies completely. Just be smart about how you consume them and purposeful in how you spend your money.

  1. I didn’t know Redbox had a text club. Thanks for the tip, Liz!

For the movie theater experience on a budget, I always go to matinees. 3D matinees at the Howard Hughes Center in LA are only $18.50, compared to $23.75 for evening showings. to save $5.25 per ticket, I’ll gladly go a few hours early!

    1. Wow, I forgot how expensive California can be, evening movies where I live now (NC) cost less than matinees out in CA.
